Super Junior dominated Taiwanese music charts last year

Last year proved to be a super one for Super Junior in Taiwan as the group’s fourth and fifth albums dominated music charts there.

SM Entertainment announced on Friday that the band’s fifth album “Mr. Simple” placed first in terms of CD sales on the Taiwanese music Web site KKBOX. Meanwhile, the electronic version of the album was the second-most downloaded. The title track has been No. 1 on the singles chart for the 21st week running.

The group’s fourth album “Bonamana” achieved nearly identical results. It ranked as the most-downloaded album and the second-most purchased CD on the island.

The title track of the album also managed to stay in first place for 63 consecutive weeks.

The band’s Chinese-language subgroup Super M, consisting of eight of its 13 members, also performed well. Its second EP “Perfection” came in second place on Kuang Nan Record’s Chinese-language album chart.

Lee Min-ho program reaches record-high viewer ratings in China

Hallyu star Lee Min ho starred in the Chinese television program "Que Rak Dae Bon Young" (“Happy Camp”), which aired on Jan. 14. The special-edition show dedicated to the Korean actor received the highest viewer rating in the last two years and one of the top 10 ratings ever by a program in China.

Usually a 60-minute show featuring a special guest, “Que Rak Dae Bon Young” was awarded a lengthy 90-minute timeslot that received a 2.65 percent viewers’ rating and chalked up a market-share of 6.49 percent.

The live program was also accessed online by some 10 million viewers. In 2011, the final episode of the most watched Chinese drama achieved 1.93 percent viewers’ rating. Thus Lee’s achievement can be seen as a phenomenal achievement.

The producer of “Que Rak Dae Bon Young” took to his personal social networking account after the show to say, “6.49% of people watching television tonight was watching our show! Thanks to Lee Min ho we are No. 1.”

Netizens were quick with praise after the show: “Lee Min ho is perfect!” “My mom thought I was mad because I screamed out loud when Lee Min-ho appeared.”

2PM to teach Korean on Japanese TV

Idol group 2PM will play a part in teaching the Japanese public about the Korean language. Beginning in April, the group will appear on a Korean language program on the NHK channel. In the program “Korean Lecture through TV” the boy band will lead a five-minute segment called “2PM’s one-point Korean.”

Within the designated segment the band members will teach the viewers about common Korean expressions as well as catchphrases useful for travelling in Korea.

2PM made its debut in Japan last year and successfully completed a Japanese tour late last year. The group will perform a six-day consecutive concert at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo during this summer.

Nippon Budokan is a concert venue that has a maximum seating capacity of 10,000 people and is called the “dream stage” for Japanese musicians who aspire to fame.



The celebrated K-pop band will release a best of album on Mar. 14 containing a hand-picked selection of tracks requested by fans. The “2PM Best: 2009 to 2011” album will consist of Korean-released versions of the band’s songs. Individual members of the band are also rising to fame on their own – Chansung and Taecyeon starred in a Japanese drama last year. Currently Nichkhun is in Thailand playing the role of a support actor in a Thai movie.

SHINee breaks another Oricon chart record

SHINee has reached second place, the highest ranking ever achieved by a male overseas artist, on Japan’s Oricon weekly DVD chart

The DVD “SHINee The First Concert In Japan: SHINee World,” released on Jan. 11, captures performances made by the group at Tokyo’s National Yoyogi Gymnasium from December last year. During its first week on sale, the DVD sold more than 29,000 copies.


Since Oricon started ranking DVDs in 1999, the only overseas male artists to reach top positions have been Underworld, a British duo, and the K-pop group 2PM, which made it to fourth place.

SHINee made its debut in Japan last June with the release of the Japanese single “Replay,” which set its own record by selling 91,000 copies in one week.

In December, Japanese record label Tower Records named SHINee, along with K-pop newbie B1A4, the best K-pop groups of the year. The decision was based on online voting conducted on the company’s Web site and on record sales for each winner.

Agency says BigBang, rocked by two scandals, is back for good

BigBang's agency says the group is back for real with a post on one of its blogs that has grabbed the attention of K-pop fanatics.
“BigBang is coming,” the blog YG Life hinted Saturday in a post with the boys’ official logo. Soon afterward, various fan Web sites were buzzing with the news.
Last year was quite a downer for BigBang, whose leader, G-Dragon, faced charges of marijuana use, while member Daesung was involved in a car accident that left a motorcyclist dead. Although the group attended the MTV Europe Music Awards, winning the 2011 award for best worldwide act, many fans in Korea and Asia turned a cold shoulder to the group’s win.
But the head of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun-suk, explained that the company’s main focus for the first part of this year will be on BigBang's successful return to the spotlight. The next big event for the group will be a March concert following the release of its new album next month.

Donghae voted as most dateable Hallyu star

Donghae, a member of popular boy band Super Junior, was picked by foreign fans as the number one Hallyu star they would date, a survey showed.


According to the survey by broadcaster Arirang TV, Donghae, 26, topped the list of the seven most datable hallyu stars voted on by web users around the world.
The survey, conducted for a month on the entertainment program Showbiz Korea, had 3,278 people participate from countries such as Morocco, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.


Donghae is gaining popularity in Asia not only with his music, but also with his acting.
The singer currently appears in the Taiwanese TV drama “Skip Beat” along with Si-won, another member of Super Junior.


Donghae topped the list with 10.8 percent of the votes, followed by Kyu-hyun of Super Junior with 8.1 percent, and G-Dragon of Big Bang with 7.9 percent.
